-
Dr. Cara Magnabosco
Assistant Professor at the ETH Zürich, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Zurich, Switzerland. Cara and her teams study the co-evolution of life and Earth using methods inspired by systems biology, phylogenetics, and data science. They combine field, experimental, and genomic data to gain a mechanistic understanding of how microbial life responds to environmental change.
-
Dr. Donato Giovannelli
Full Professor and Microbial Ecologist at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. He works on the microbiology of extreme environments and is fundamentally interested in the co-evolution of the biosphere and the geosphere and how life influences planetary-scale processes.
-
Dr. Valerie Yselle De Anda Torres
Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology, University of Vienna, Austria. Val investigates how microbial metabolism evolved and shaped life on Earth, with a particular focus on microorganisms inhabiting extreme environments analogous to those of early Earth, including hydrothermal vents, hot springs, microbial mats, and stromatolites. Her research combines genome-resolved microbial ecology, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics to uncover novel microbial diversity.
-
Dr. Martin Taubert
Junior Research Group Leader at Institute of Biodiversity, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany. His group focuses on identifying active key taxa in complex microbial communities, tracking carbon fluxes through microbiomes quantitatively and over time. They apply stable isotope probing (SIP)-based approaches in combination with omics, single cell approaches, and biogeochemical rate measurements, to link taxon-specific activity with ecosystem-scale processes.
-
Dr. Tristan Caro
Foster & Coco Stanback Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CalTech who studies how microbes adapt to and function in some of Earth’s most ubiquitous and extreme environments, from soil, to permafrost, the deep subsurface, and volcanic ice caves. His research utilizes novel stable isotope probing and ‘omics methodologies to track microbial activity and its biogeochemical imprints.
Subsurface microbiology plays a critical role in shaping Earth's ecosystems, driving biogeochemical processes, and addressing critical environmental challenges. ISSM provides a unique forum for researchers to explore the complex interactions between subsurface microorganisms and their environments.
The International Symposium on Subsurface Microbiology (ISSM) is a premier global scientific conference dedicated to advancing the understanding of the microbial ecosystems that thrive beneath Earth's surface. With a focus on cutting-edge, unpublished research, ISSM creates a dynamic platform for scientists from around the world to explore the latest breakthroughs in subsurface microbiology and engage in meaningful discussions that bring the field forward. The symposium shall foster an environment of collaboration and discovery, prioritizing thoughtful exchanges after each presentation and encouraging informal interactions among researchers at all career stages.
In 2026, from the 30th of August to the 4th of September, the 12th ISSM will take place in Vienna, Austria - a city renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, and commitment to scientific excellence. Vienna’s central European location serves as a hub for international collaboration, providing an inspiring backdrop for scientific networking.
The ISSM starts Sunday (30th Aug) evening and will last until Friday (4th Sept) noon. Wednesday (2nd Sept) will be available exploring the cultural heritage of Vienna or small excursions (information will follow to a later time point) and will have the conference dinner in the evening.
We look forward to welcoming you to Vienna
